Doraemon teached me keigo
I've had trouble with keigo and kenjougo, I mixed one with another, mixed which verb is for what situation, what they mean, terrible. I found JLPT books and textbooks just add to the overall confusion as they give you chunks of information.
To sort out the issue, I thought I would try some native material for japanese kids that want to learn keigo. The Doraemon educational manga series have many volumes which are great for learners of Japanese (for example the grammar one 文法力がつく) and this keigo volume is one of them for sure.
I'd call this a gem. It is divided in keigo types, keigo, kenjougo I and II, teineigo, bikago and salutations. Then each word get a page of its own, with sample sentences, an explanation and a manga strip with a situation that the word is used in real life. After each chapter there are small tests, crosswords and in the end there are some brilliant keigo exercises that I found really helpful in summarizing what I learned.
Even though it is for japanese elementary school kids, this should need a good kanji and grammar level, so I'd say, N3 and up. But it is for kids and because of that it is simple and has uncomplicated explanations, plus it uses examples with situations from japanese customs and culture. The small format makes it easy to read in chunks, you can easily revisit the words that give you trouble over and over again until you grasp them.
In the end there is also the best list of keigo verbs I have ever seen in a book. I also learned some keigo that I have never seen in textbooks before, like 拝借する、おいとま.
In the end there is an index in case you need to find a word quick.
I plan to read more from this series!
