I watched this as part of JFF+ Independent Cinema 2023. For most of the JFF+ films, I've watched with English subs, but I wanted to try watching this one without subs. It's way above my comprehension level (I am terrible still at listening lol), so I absolutely didn't catch everything in this. Especially since I didn't rewind at all, just let it play. But I was still able to understand more than I expected :-) The dialogue was spoken clearly and much of it was slow enough for me to understand. The singing portions sometimes have Japanese subtitles.
If you are interested in learning about お盆 and the preservation of culture after a community has been displaced, give this a watch. It's quite long and slow (could have been cut down a lot imo), but I still enjoyed it.
Note: there is also quite a bit of English in this documentary since quite a bit of it is filmed in Hawai'i, and there are many portions of the film with no dialogue due to it focusing on the music.
