This was the first non-translated, native book I read and it was a good way to start. It's about a girl who solves three cases - each one with a 'grand reveal' at the end, similar to a Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie. Sure the cases are not the most exciting, but the language is relatively standard and the stories are interesting enough.
There are certainly a few confusing parts, but it feels much easier than a manga - basically every single sentence can be translated by DeepL if you need it (i.e. the sentences are more standard).
The WaniKani vocab sheet is also great for the first two stories (3rd one lacks coverage). Overall, I recommend.
