It's about a girl who is the apprentice of a monk(?) in magical-China. It's small-scale fantasy, focused around one small town and temple. The author has a bibliography in the back that seems to be references for all the magic/religion stuff, so it looks and feels like a fair amount of effort went into the worldbuilding. Plotwise, it's a pretty straightfoward coming of age story. The characters are all well developed, and the prose is good.
So yeah - really solid book. It just didn't wow me. I would recommend it if the blurb grabs you though.
Difficultly-wise - I found it pretty rough, and almost entirely because of the vocabulary. There's a lot of magical-China vocab (that is different from all the other magical-China vocab I've acquired so far...), but also the author just knows a lot of words.
