A collection of 6 unconnected, mystery (adjacent) short stories. The setting and characters are quite different, so there should be something for everyone. There is an audiobook as well.
My thoughts on the individual stories. Some of them are quite spoilery, so read at your own discretion.
『夜警』
A great start. I really enjoyed the parallels between the deaths of both subordinates. In the end it didn't matter if he took action or not, both extremes resulted in the same outcome.
『死人宿』
Not much I can say about this one except that I really liked the concept. I feel like the next word of that sentence should be "but". Unfortunately, I'm writing this review a couple of months after reading the book, so I'm not sure what my problem with the story was or if there even was a problem in the first place.
『柘榴』
This is probably the story I liked the least. I found the explanation lacking. While the twist was unexpected, I just cannot comprehend why everyone is so obsessed with that man.
『万灯』
This one was great. It's always fun to read a story where you know the narrator will commit a crime. You get to wonder how he ends up in a situation like that. Plus, the schadenfreude was strong with this one.
『関守』
For this one I had already figured out how it would end. The cheap coffee was just too suspicious. And that seemed like the sort of twist the author would pull. But even though I knew the end, I still enjoyed it.
『満願』
The titular story. I enjoyed it, but it didn't leave as deep of an impression as some of the other stories did.
All in all, I had a good time reading these. Even the stories I say I liked less were still enjoyable. If you like mystery short stories, you'll probably like these.
