Basic plot: A hunter makes a deal with the devil.

The grammar in this is probably mostly N4, with the caveat that this is a very old story and you will run into old words (like 百姓; farmer, country person) and now unused spellings (言ひつゞけました -> 言いつづけました, そうだらう -> そうだろう, もつてゐる->もっている). It does not map well to JLPT ratings because that test will not look for your ability to read things written in the 1920s.

I highly encourage reading along with the YouTube 朗読 as it will make it significantly easier if you're not used to this type of writing.

I wasn't sure whether to put this in children's stories or short stories, but went with short stories just to try to avoid people picking it up assuming it was a normal, modern-language children's story. It's a folklore-ish tale about a hunter meeting the devil in the woods.

I personally didn't find it that engaging, but if you like folktales or you just want an easier introduction to old fashioned writing this has merit.
