An interesting extra to the series
This is essentially a special (non-canon?) episode of the Cardcaptor Sakura anime series, which assumes the viewer is familiar with the story and characters from the first half of the Clow Card arc, so it should be watched as extra content for the anime rather than as an entry point to or summary of the series. The movie takes place chronologically sometime after episode 33 and before episode 36 (between seasons 1 & 2 in Natively), but can be enjoyed any time after Mei-Ling is introduced.
Language-wise it's comparable to the anime, having mostly the same cast of characters, speech styles, and types of dialogue. One new character speaks in an exaggeratedly antiquated style, and small handful of scenes have dialogue competing with the SFX, otherwise there's no significant difference in difficulty from the rest of the series before it. The dialogue has plenty of breathing room, so it's not any more taxing to continue to follow what's going on over the hour+ runtime compared to a 20-minute episode.
The film itself is entertaining and has some lovely animation, but it's nothing mind-blowing compared to the rest of the show; it really does just feel like another episode and not "Cardcaptors: The Movie". The change of scenery to Hong Kong, and the change in conflict to something that's unrelated to the Clow Cards for once, were both refreshing. There are a couple of nice character moments, but for the most part the setting and the plot were the focus, which made the rushed conclusion kind of disappointing from both a plot and character standpoint. The pacing felt pretty solid until the last 10 minutes... and then it just ends, without a feeling that Sakura was necessary for the resolution or that any depth was added to the cast.
Certainly worth watching if you're going through the series anyway, and you'll enjoy it if you're enjoying the show, but it shines less than I hoped for a "The Movie" or even a special episode.
