The author is a seasoned mountain hiker, and the stories in his books are supposedly based on his experiences, or experiences of other hikers he knows. This is a collection of lightly creepy short stories that all take place in the mountains of Japan. The emphasis is as much on the experience of hiking those mountains as it is on spooky happenings. It's worth looking up the places mentioned - whenever I found the energy to do so, the experience was much richer.
There are 20 short stories in this book, and it took me a long time to read because I felt the need to pause after a few stories, or it felt way too repetitive. It is an enjoyable book to dip into, especially if you're interested in Japan geography and nature, but not to be read in one go.
There are a lot of place names, ridges, peaks and streams included. Not all of them are mentioned with their full name, but many are. And there are several terms specific to hiking and mountains. Other than that, it didn't present many language difficulties.
