A spin-off novel of the Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha series. Timeline-wise it is set after Raidou starts working at the Narumi Detective Agency, but before the plot of the first game.
The author likes to use unusual kanji, probably because the story is taking place in the 1930s. There's some furigana. Sometimes you'll even get the actual reading of the kanji, but just as often you'll find katakana (or in rare cases even English) instead.
I would recommend playing the first game before reading the novel. There are some references you won't catch otherwise, and I don't think I would have liked Narumi as much only based off of the novel. I gave it 4 stars, but if I hadn't played the games before it would probably drop to a 3 star rating for me.
