I think this is a good story to read in the context of it being a story commonly read by Japanese children in middle school, and also with the context that Dazai is a famous writer who has other works quite different than this so I would not take it as a good 'first Dazai' if that's what you're after.

Broadly, this is a retelling of a Greek legend about trust and honor.

The grammar is a bit old fashioned and some older kanji and vocab is present, but it's not too bad and I think quite doable for anyone with N3+ level grammar and a dictionary at hand.
