I haven't watched anything of the show this is a spin-off of, but it was still easy to follow along with. Nothing super interesting, but it is a cute little self-contained story, and while I was a little worried about what direction it would go in when (spoiler) it turns out that the princess has a crush on a woman who was dressed as a man, it didn't really rely on that for the humor.
Language: Characters speak in ye olde Japanese, but if you've seen other historical works before, it's nothing difficult. The one thing I didn't really didn't like is that the princess has an extremely squeaky voice that a) can be a bit harder to understand b) I found literally painful to listen to.
