A typical but heartwarming story

This was a cute (I want to say coming of age? But that's for child -> adult and this is kind of like teenager -> teenager lol) story centered around Miu, a high school girl who hates everything about herself. She starts to come out of her shell thanks to Haruto, an upperclassman in the film club that she's always had a crush on.

This was seriously so sweet. Sure, the concept is not the most original, but it's kind of like how they say in this book, that different authors can take the same concept and create a totally unique work. I really appreciated a lot of commentary in this book, especially at the end regarding families. I also loved how the book handled China--a girl who is portrayed as Miu's rival but is more importantly her friend. I liked how even when Miu became jealous of other girls, she never put anyone down (well, other than herself). There was no women vs women in this book, which was so refreshing!! We need more books like this!!

One of the biggest themes of this book came across as reflection(映). Not only the reflections of their faces in puddles after the rain, or the reflections of Haruto on the video screen, but also self-reflection and realization. This was a truly heartful story and I'd like to read more by Natsue Shiomi in the future.
