Considered one of the masterpieces of Japanese modern literature, this book explores the gradient of evil that permitted atrocities to occur during the Second World War. Endo Shusaku illustrates the struggle with conscience and duty in breathtakingly gruesome detail.
There are many unfamiliar medical terms in this book, some of which appear to no longer be used in modern medicine. In addition, the author replaces some furigana readings for the German meaning in katakana. There is also use of Kansai and Kyushu dialect in the dialogue, which can be difficult to parse. However, the grammar itself was not terribly advanced.
