Funny and cute... once you get past the first chapter or two
The other review is right: you have to get past the first chapter or two of the protagonist being the edgiest edgelord to ever edgelord (he is, literally, in 2nd-year middle school, so he at least is at the right age to be a 中二病) before it starts to open up. Two things help: one, his actions and his true thoughts are always in the right place, and two, he's a total dweeb and always looks it.
Aside from that, on the language front this is mostly middle-school vocab with some caveats. The protag's chuuni tendencies, as well as a trend towards sex jokes, make it a bit more complicated than the average read, but the grammar is largely fairly straightforward and the book's short chapters encourage you to fly through them with ease.
/edit Jan 2024: I'm up to date on this series and it is by far one of the sweetest romances I've ever read. Highly recommended.
