Not bad, but could have been better
As the follow-up to Makoto Shinkai's popular 君の名は, it's no secret that 天気の子 would have a lot to try and live it up to when fans first anticipated its release. While it has its charms that set it apart from its predecessor, 天気の子 doesn't have the solid message nor amount of character development that made 君の名は a widespread success.
While I absolutely enjoyed Hina and Nagi Amano, I couldn't get into Hodaka's character. I felt sorry for him at first after learning about his unlucky background as he tries to make a life for himself in the metropolis of Tokyo. However, his selfishness and lack of character development tainted my impression of his role and the general story. While I realize he becomes well-intended in the end and cares about Hina and Nagi, his personality could have been more well-rounded.
That aside, readers can still learn a variety of useful words and expressions from reading 天気の子. The illustrations in the Tsubasa edition are adorable for any Shinkai fans to love.
