I really enjoyed this book, but from a difficulty perspective it's an odd one:

  • There are multiple genres represented in the book which stretches the vocab a lot. Additionally, many words are only relevant for the chapter they're in and never used after that.
  • A lot of alternative kanji are used, but they all get furigana on first use.
  • There is some particularly niche vocab and even grammar being used, but often in those cases one of the characters will rephrase it in a simpler manner or explain the meaning.
  • During the non-fantasy scenes this book's difficult drops down to the high 20s/low 30s range. Vanilla grammar and standard vocab.
  • The first chapter I thought was tons of fun, but many people in the book club found it hard to follow because of how fantastical it is (the genre was magical realism)
  • The author is a big fan of descriptions. I found it rich and vivid, other book club readers found it tedious and exhausting. Only you know what type of content you enjoy.

Overall if you like descriptive, fantastical, and light hearted books I recommend this.
