As a note, I stopped reading this book 1/3 of the way through.
Edit: In September 2023 I tried again to read this with the audiobook at 1.5x speed and I stand by both my grading of the book and also that I dislike it too much to finish it. :/
I wanted so much to like this book. It starts out interesting and the plot sounds alright. Guy is accused of being a murderer on the internet, life is ruined, etc etc. It ended up not being my kind of story at all. I love me a murder mystery and this is more just...awkward tension. I felt so much frustration at the fumbling nature of the main character and the story inched along so slowly. This felt like it was a brilliant idea for a short story that got stretched into a novel.
For learning this is probably decent. A nice spread of vocabulary, an explicitly modern topic (social death via Twitter), and a bit of insight into Japanese comedy (the main character is a comedian).
I feel like I would have liked this as a short story or even a movie, but couldn't be bothered with it as a book.
