A decent adaptation of the LNs that includes the same shortcomings, along with sometimes questionable choices in editing, cuts and cinematography. It has all the same flaws - extremely poorly written romantic interests, uncomfortable scenes and resolutions, suspension of disbelief issues, adults you really want to yell at for being so disappointing, the way it handles/resolves a sexual assault, etc. I think you lose out a lot, due to the lack of various characters' inner monologue from the LNs. Otoh, it has lots of wholesome moments, like the novel.
I have complicated feelings about the ending wrt Sayu's family situation, but otherwise am fine with the ending. My optimal ending would have been Yoshida legally becoming Sayu's guardian, and her staying far away from her mother and Hokkaido, and getting her life back on track, in Tokyo.
In case you're worried about the worst: Yoshida maintains the boundary of not being interested in a sexual or romantic relationship with Sayu throughout the entire show
