Mari Wakatake has been living with her Grandmother for the past 5 years after a tragedy caused the loss of her home, friends and family, as well as her memories. Fearing for her future, her Grandmother admits her into Kaihou Academy, for her to make friends, instead of home studying. Although reluctant to go, she does and meets Hagino Sekonji. At first appearance, this girl appears like a normal student but inside her lies a deep secret that relates to the tragedy of 5 years ago.

I only watched 3 eps, so take with a grain of salt, but the show is basically trying to balance school slice of life with horror-ish sci-fi, and just doesn't do a particularly good job of it. It feels like it's trying too hard to be mysterious and to tell two different stories at once. It seemingly also wants you to ship the two leads... which might be cool if things didn't start with one lead choking the other in a fit of temporary insanity, and never so much as acknowledging or apologizing for it, but instead pretending like nothing happened, and half gaslighting the other lead, followed by the other lead feeling drawn to but afraid of her. Another character even later remarks something like "things between them seem あまり仲良くない but like they could eventually be good friends" - and like I'm just not buying it.
If there were JP subs I would have kept going, but between the things that didn't work, and missing half the ship/tech/battle vocab, I decided it's not worth it for now. Maybe I'll try again when my vocab is stronger.
