Series Blurb

The story centers on 35-year-old novelist Makio Kōdai, and her 15-year-old niece Asa, who live together under one roof. Makio took Asa in on a sudden impulse after Asa's parents, which included Makio's older sister, passed away. The next day, Makio returns to her senses and remembers that she does not do well in the company of other people. So begins their daily life, as Makio attempts to acclimate to a roommate, while Asa attempts to get used to an adult who never acts like one.

Exceptional introspective and creative style

When I first came across the show, all I knew was I could tell from the description it would be interesting - and it was! While it's maybe not what we'd usually call "slice of life" in English, it's a very compelling slice of Asa and Makio's life together. One thing I really appreciate is that they're both given ample time as the perspective character. Makio and the other adults feel very realistic and relatable. I particularly enjoyed having a character like Makio who is neither the ideal adult nor a ダメ大人, but an author who has some parts of her life together and other parts not. Her relationship with Asa, the way they support but don't necessarily fully get each other, the way they each influence the other, etc is very enjoyable to watch.

The style of storytelling was really unique too - particularly the way it portrays Asa's (sometimes positive, sometimes negative) dissociation with very fantasy-esque visuals, and journey motifs. Even though Asa sometimes felt like she had a bit of a flat personality (understandably), the way the show puts her and Makio's thoughts & their various lives together manages to make it still compelling. Also I really loved the supporting male lead, and the role he plays in both of their lives.

As a final note: Makio is played by Sawashiro Miyuki and the supporting lead by Suwabe Junichi - both favorite voice actors of mine. While Junichi's style is fairly typical of his (very dreamy 😍) acting, I felt like Sawashiro-san really showed a part of herself that I haven't seen in her other performances - and can't imagine anyone else playing Makio.

While the content matter is a bit heavy, I'd recommend this anime without hesitation.
