Series Blurb
Ken Kaneki is a bookworm college student who meets a girl names Rize at a cafe he frequents. They're the same age and have the same interests, so they quickly become close. Little does Kaneki know that Rize is a ghoul – a kind of monster that lives by hunting and devouring human flesh. When part of her special organ – "the red child" – is transplanted into Kaneki, he becomes a ghoul himself, trapped in a warped world where humans are not the top of the food chain.

Tokyo Ghoul is crazy popular but I did not feel anything special while watching. It is certainly entertaining and well-produced but I wouldn't go around and recommend those around me to absolutely watch it.
I appreciated that the author's message is clear and doesn't require watching multiple video essays to fully grasp the point. The more nuanced handling of what could have easily been just The Big Bad Guys™ was also nice. Really hammers in that every side in a war feels like they are the virtuous good guys and the other side is pure evil.
Most of all, I was impressed by the relatively low difficulty*. As a mega popular action anime, I would have expected this to be relatively similar to other mega-popular action animes like 進撃の巨人 or 呪術廻戦, but 東京喰種 turned out to be way easier to understand. The only issue is that there is in-universe jargon that is not properly introduced (it is an anime adaptation of a manga, so they've had to cut some things) so I was confused every time they uttered words that essentially do not exist outside of the Tokyo Ghoul universe — and certainly not in your J-E dictionary.
*: Exception made for 丸手 and a few other high-ranking CCG officers. Those guys were so annoying to understand.
