Cross-dressing female lead in 90s shoujo? Sign me up!
While I can't claim it's a literary masterpiece, this is an incredibly fun anime based on an influential manga that ran from 1996-2004. It's got a lot of now-standard shoujo tropes, and is basically a nice love story with the twist of the crossdressing female lead - which it neither treats as a gag nor tries to do any deep exploration of gender with afaict. It's ultimately just a plot device (one that 桜蘭高校ホスト部 in turn adopted & further developed). Unlike Ouran this one feels a lot less problematicly dated, and the story is both simpler and less hit-or-miss. Also the Kansai character is well done!
I feel like this anime kept the vibe of 90s/2000s shoujo very well, and between that & the crossdressing female lead, I could really go for more! If there's a season 2 then I'm absolutely gonna watch it.
