(4.60/5)Really sweet and touching
This is the first live-action drama that's managed to hold my interest, and it was such a heartwarming watch. There's a great balance between Kiyo's life as a cook, her extremely intimate friendship with Sumire, the life and work of the Maiko and apprentice Maiko, and the family-like household they live in, etc. The cooking scenes are really beautiful and inspiring... makes me think about getting back into it. The characters are all interesting, with a great amount of depth and personality, and different things going on in their lives - dreams, romance, potential marriage offers, internal struggles, family issues, and coming of age, are all things that are dealt with - and the multi-generational cast is really enjoyable. Also I was surprised at just how much it's emphasized that Kiyo and Sumire have something beyond normal friendship - there's even one scene where the characters comment ほんま 姉妹みたいやなあ。あれは姉妹以上どすお母さん。
From a language perspective this is all in Kyoto-ben. If you're already familiar with Osaka-ben (which is what most people associate with Kansai-ben), it's not too far a stretch. Though for someone who has no familiarity with Kansai-ben at all, this would probably be on the more difficult side.
I would really love to watch a second season of this, if one is ever made!

Calm and heartwarming story
This is a very enjoyable and calming story set in modern Kyoto. Tells the story of a girl who moves from Aomori with her best friend to become a maiko in Kyoto. Then we follow how their personal lives unfold in this new chapter of their lives, as our MC actually goes on to become a cook while her best friend stays on the journey of a Maiko. Language-wise, this website rates it as a more difficult usage, but I think it's because of Kyoto-ben and the way of speaking of the inner circle of Maiko/Geisha (such as using どす instead of です, for example). If you're used to Kansai-ben, it's fairly similar. Other than that, the vocabulary used here is nothing crazy. 100% recommend for some good Kansai-ben exposure.
