After technologically-illiterate Lain's classmate commits suicide, girls in her class begin getting strange emails from her. She said that she had not in fact committed suicide, but rather only "gave up her physical form" in order to become part of the Wired, a network of computers similar to the Internet. This drives Lain to become interested in computers, and she gets sucked into the surreal world of the Wired, all while losing her own sense of reality and identity. This an
