TW: Suicide, death
After technologically-illiterate Lain's classmate commits suicide, girls in her class begin getting strange emails from her. She said that she had not in fact committed suicide, but rather only "gave up her physical form" in order to become part of the Wired, a network of computers similar to the Internet. This drives Lain to become interested in computers, and she gets sucked into the surreal world of the Wired, all while losing her own sense of reality and identity. This anime was really one of the best psychological anime I have ever seen. Even though it's not horror, there were definitely some scenes that were terrifying, as well as parts that were emotional. Expect lots of surreal, reality-bending things to happen in this anime. It was also very thick with metaphors, although I feel I got part of they were trying to convey I still came out of it feeling like he message kind of flew over my head. I definitely have to rewatch this a few more times to really "get it".
One of the hardest things about this is the audio quality. There were a lot of scenes where I could barely make out what they were saying, as the voices can be very echoey and often louder background noises were layered over them. Not only that, a lot of episodes included longer monologues that explained the workings of the Wired, the Knights, etc. Those parts were harder to follow as if you missed some critical information, you might get lost. On the other hand, a lot of the more emotionally impactful scenes had either simple dialogue or almost no dialogue at all. Overall, although it was the hardest anime I have ever watched, it was worth it.
