When I first read よつばと！, I had just finished with Genki II. If I'm being honest, that's the level I'd recommend starting at. I was able to understand and enjoy it, with only a little help from a dictionary. (If you try earlier, then everything will be just a tiny bit too hard, and it really sucks the fun out of reading a manga that was intended to be a comedy!) It gave me a huge burst of confidence to read something completely in Japanese, and get quite a few laughs too. Overall, よつばと！is not
