I read a lot of picture books and this is a really good one. The gorgeous and creative illustrations work together really well with the interesting text/narrative.

This book has some complex grammatical concepts. If you wanted to use it as a study aid it might be helpful in learning or teaching the conditional.

Junaida (the illustrator) had a whole shelf dedicated to him at Tsutaya Books Daikanyama when I went recently. I bought this book because I knew I had to reread it. (Also, the illustrations can pretty much stand on their own, so it will make a good gift even to someone with no Japanese.)

When I got home and instantly started missing Japan, I reread it and it made me feel better actually. :)

I would not buy this book for language-learning purposes as there are only about 3-5 words per two pages

The language is very often beginner-friendly, but colloquial speech and comments between the adults can be significantly more difficult. All speech-bubble kanji have furigana, and non-speech bubble kanji are infrequent and not usually essential to the story. The art is wonderful and very motivating (to read more so you can see more drawings)! Overall, great for beginners as long as you are able to let go of some little things here and there that are a lot more advanced.
