I picked up this book since it won the Akutagawa Prize and had made headlines for featuring AI. The book is set in the not-too-distant future, and an AI chatbot much like ChatGPT serves more as a background character rather than a central one. I found the first section a little tough to get through, but the second section changes narrators and I found that easier to follow. Overall I did not like this book as much as カラスの親指 or カエルの小指 by the same author. Those books have flawed but likeable characters, whereas almost no one in Skeleton Key is sympathetic. There are some twists but they feel cliché. The action was kind of fun but ultimately, I was happy when it was over.

Fun ghost story!

This book seems like it will be a collection of short stories but they all tie together at the end. Definitely not as difficult as Morimi Tomihiko's other novels. I really enjoyed it!
