The second volume of Rayearth packs quite a lot into a pretty quick read. Since the origins are out of the way, there's more danger and action this volume, and while the action scenes have a lot less dialogue there's also more worldbuilding and lore which can be a bit trickier language-wise, so it evens out.

There's some solid character development, great gags, and new intrigues. Umi's freakout around the halfway point is particularly funny and a surprisingly psychological look at the main trio

There was some exciting action for a bit (and even a bit of romance), and things got interesting... but then fell into the same poor habits as volume 1: drawn out exposition, solutions to conflicts basically being explained and/or handed to the characters, various conversation scenes taking way too long to resolve, etc. The end gets just interesting enough that "ok, maybe I'll continue onto book 3" - which I guess I'll do, since I'm reading it with the book club.
