This is part of a series titled はじめての文学 which consists of collections of stories by authors like Banana Yoshimoto and Haruki Murakami. As the name implies, the stories written with fewer kanji than one might expect. In this sense it is intended for children, though the stories themselves don't seem child-like to me.
