coffee & teenage angst
San is an 18 year old boy who is going through some stuff. His dad recently passed away unexpectedly and barely a year later his mum has remarried. What worse is that she has inexplicably married the owner of the poncy independent coffee shop that he dad frequented.
The vocab in this novel is very high-frequency & topic familiar but the writing was not as easy as I expected based on having read similar YA novels. There were times the characters would make a comment or joke that I struggled to parse as a learner. The dialogue had a much more colloquial vibe about it than I expected and often I felt that even though I knew all the words in a sentence I was still missing tone or meaning.
The novel itself starts off as cliche teen angst but the story you think it will tell wraps up about half way in and it ends up going in a slightly different direction than expected. I enjoyed that it subverted my expectations.
