The third Japanese novel I ever read. I pretty much understood all of the story, and a lot of the details, but many other particulars were of course lost in translation. A 36 year old woman, presumably autistic and asexual, is still working at her convenience store job from high school and living a very humble life. It fits her appreciation for rigidity, and she’s satisfied with life. Other people though judge her for not having a traditional job, not having a husband, etc. She has to struggle with society’s expectations, try to conform to them, but eventually decides to give up and just say fuck it. The characters are simple but effective. The writing was very clear, flowed well, straightforward, although it certainly wasn’t too flowery for better or for worse. And I did love the story, it had me very captivated and emotional, and it’s something that I can personally relate to, so yeah. I liked it a whole lot. It was a fascinating and relatable journey with interesting things to say, and that’s about what I would hope for in a great book.
