This was my first Soseki.
I'd heard him hyped up a lot, and I don't think an essay on his musings on pens is the best entry point to his writing. It was nicely written, but I wouldn't call it compelling, and I'm not shocked by that given the subject matter.
This was written in or around 1912, and so it has quite a few unusual kanji and ways of saying things. If you can get the kanji readings (the youtube read alouds help!) it's not too bad - but it's still certainly not as smooth of reading as something written even 20 years later.
